The discovery of the three-dimensional structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by Watson and Crick 50 years ago is of great importance because it outlines the possibilities for an understanding of the way the genetic information is stored, replicated and expressed. It opened the gate not only for the central dogma of molecular biology, but also for genetic engineering including gene therapy and sequencing genomic DNA of various organisms including Homo sapiens.
