Území subtropického brazilského státu Rio Grande do Sul je typické vegetační formací travinného biomu "campos" , která vznikla během kolonizace původně více zalesněné oblasti. Zajímavá variabilita ekosystémů zahrnuje araukariové lesy, azonální tropickou lesní vegetaci nebo přechodné travinné formace. Zvláštnosti, např. pastviny se zakrslou palmou Butia, dokumentují klimatické změny v geohistorickém rámci. Vysoká diverzita rostlinných druhů je důvodem k ochraně (např. národní park Espinilho).

The territory of the subtropical Brasilian district of Rio Grande do Sul is mostly typified by "campos" grassland vegetation developed during the modern history of human colonization of the original mainly forested area. A survey is given of the interesting variety of ecosystems including the Atlantic Araukaria-forests, azonal tropical woody vegetation or savanna-like formations. Peculiarities, e.g. plant stands with the Butia palm tree, document climate changes on a geohistorical scale. Geomorphological features include the Serra Geral and Serra do Sudeste mountain ranges and the "central depression" with the Jacuí and Ibicuí rivers. Plant species diversity seems to be very high and it is an important nature protection area (e.g., the Espinilho National Park).
