Současné fylogenetické poznatky řadí ptáky (Aves) do příbuzenstva s plazy s diapsidní lebkou, tedy mj. i s dinosaury. Fosilní doklady vývojově nejstarších ptáků a jejich předků dosud chybí, ale přibývá řada druhohorních nálezů ptáků i vývojově nezávislých linií theropodních dinosaurů s peřím a křídly. Rozdílné měli např. funkční pohybové jednotky - u theropodních dinosaurů byly pánevní končetiny funkčně spojené s ocasem, některé formy měly též křídla, u ptáků jsou tři nezávislé jednotky - ocas, nohy a křídla.

Current phylogenetic knowledge classifies birds (Aves) as relatives of reptiles with a diapsid skull, which include the with dinosaurs. Fossil evidence of the earliest birds and their ancestors has been missing. Nevertheless, the numbers of Mesozoic findings of birds have been increasing, as those of evolutionary independent lineages of theropod dinosaurs with feathers and wings. For example, there are differences in functional movement units among these groups. While theropod dinosaurs had pelvic extremities functionally integrated with the tail, plumy forms had wings in addition. In birds, three independent units evolved - the tail, legs and wings.
