The island of New Guinea – the second largest island in the world – is situated between Indo-Malaysia and Australia. With the high degree of endemism, the latest study of its species diversity has revealed over 1,200 fern species, 15,000-20,000 flowering plant species (representing about 5% of the world flora) and 200,000-300,000 insect species. The vegetation is a complex of various elements differentiated by their geographical origin, the time of their formation and migration to the island. Indo-Malaysian flora prevails in this territory, in the central part of the island temperate Australian flora has established itself, and high mountain ranges have created the conditions for Australian-Asian alpine flora. Natural formations are classified into five vegetation types, which will be presented in the following parts of the series.
