One of the most important environmental tasks, especially in the high mountain areas of Kyrgyzstan, is erosion prevention, closely connected with landslides and other natural disasters (such as muddy-stone slides, floods, avalanches etc.). Enhancement of the underground water level is another important problem. The planting of appropriate tree and shrub species can improve the situation. The species for planting in endangered localities are selected on the basis of preceding research in the Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences in Bishkek. Planting in extreme localities needs to be based on an evaluation of soil and climatic conditions and the selection of woody plants successfully introduced in the Chuj Lowland with frequent saline and waterlogged soils.
