In 2004, a new national park, the New Forest National Park in southern England, was established in the United Kingdom. It includes semi-natural ecosystems of English lowlands, such as forests, heaths, moors and peat-bogs. In the Middle Ages, the area was affected by grazing, which has preserved its diverse habitat mosaic. Among European lowlands, the area harbours the highest species diversity in epiphytic lichens and mosses.
