The Šumava/Bohemian Forest National Park has been suffering from bark beetle plagues since the 1990s. The solution to this problem has been very contentious in professional circles. The Trojmezná National Nature Reserve is one of the areas where human intervention in a national park has been intensively debated. The author presents the primeval forest character of natural mountain spruce forests growing at the site, as well as the more general features of the Central European primeval spruce forest.
