K účinnému přenosu cizích genů do buňky je zapotřebí přenašeče, který má schopnost stát se součástí genomu hostitele. Tuto schopnost mají zejména jednoduché RNA viry - retroviry, které mohou svou RNA přepsat do dvouřetězcové DNA a stabilně ji začlenit do genomu v jádře hostitelské buňky. Celý genom retrovirů vyjma regulačních sekvencí přitom může být nahrazen genetickou informací, kterou chceme přenést. Využití této techniky je perspektivní zejména v oblasti genové terapie.

A vector is necessary for the effective transfer of guest genes into a cell which is able to become part of a host genome. Especially simple RNA viruses - retro-viruses have demonstrated such an ability, which can copy their RNA into two-chain DNA and thus introduce it into the genome in the nucleus of a host cell. A whole genome of retroviruses, except regulation sequences, can thus be replaced by the genetic information which we intend to transfer. Use of this technique is a promising method, especially in the sphere of gene therapy.
