Due to habitat destruction and loss, saproxylic insects inhabiting old and superannuated trees rank among the most seriously endangered communities in Europe. An examination of Common or English Oaks (Quercus robur) near Břeclav (South Moravia) confirmed that it is the oldest trees that are the most valuable from the viewpoint of insect protection. Both forest and conservation management should take account of the fact.
