Rezervace Žofínský prales, založená J. F. Buquoyem r. 1838 na 172, 6 hektarech jedlových a smrkových porostů s příměsí buku, jilmu a javoru, není v pravém slova smyslu pralesem.

The Žofín Virgin Forest Nature Reserve, established by J. F. Buquoy in 1838 on the 172,6 ha forest area with fir and spruce stands, with some beech, elm and maple mixed in, is, strictly speaking, not a virgin forest. The reason is that already in less than ten years after the establishment of the Nature Reserve, its area had already been reduced to 1,7 ha, as directed by the forest ranger and forest plans manager W. Rolland. Moreover, dead trees kept being taken away even from this reduced area for decades. An absolute ban on the exploitation was not issued until 1882. Since 1888, the reservation area has gradually been increasing again up to the present 99,8 ha.
