Vegetation and microbial communities of wetlands react very sensitively to changes in the supply of nutrients and their consequences. The higher accessibility of nutrients is also one of the reasons for the decay and decline of the common reed (Phragmites australis) in Europe. An indirect effect, i.e. consequences of the higher accumulation of organic matter and its putrefaction in the absence oxygen, prevails over a direct effect. During the mentioned process, toxic substances are released, which cause damage especially to the root tops.
