Between the two main biomes of Alaska - the taiga and tundra - a zone of transition exists, whose movements indicate very clearly the changes in the environment, such as global climate change. These can be deduced from forest extension or restriction, as well as from fragmentation of forest stands in their northern distribution limit area. Forests are also influenced by regular forest fires, which constitute a part of the ecological regime here.
