After a long–lasting winter, followed by almost no spring at all, extremely high temperatures during the summer season and a late start to the following winter in 2006 in Europe, as well as various geo–climatic catastrophes in other parts of the world, the changes in global ecosystems, the causes of these phenomena and the ways to influence them were discussed more than ever before during 2006. What is the role and what are the options of scientists? To what degree are they dependent on other groups in society to work in conditions which enable them to fulfil the task expected of them? Is this task really expected of them?
