Man has used the forest and its products since time immemorial, but the serious impact of his activities dates from the Neolithic Age, due to his establishment of a settled way of life at that time. The forest was a source of wood for fire and the construction of shelters, but it also served as pasture for domesticated animals, which resulted in the fragmentation of forest stands. Later metal and glass production and its requirement for wood led to a high felling rate. Man thus influenced the forests not only through direct deforestation, but also through changes to species composition and spatial stand structure.
