V roce 1907 se začal věnovat studiu dědičnosti zbarvení srsti C. C. Little, který následně vytvořil první inbrední kmen laboratorních myší - DBA (dilute, brown, non-agouti). Historie využívání pokusných myší je už nicméně starší, původně je ke studiu dědičnosti používal i G. Mendel, než přešel k modelu hrachu. Teprve cílená tvorba různých inbredních kmenů v Jacksonově laboratoři v Bar Harbor pod vedením C. C. Littla vedla k širokému využívání myši jako modelového laboratorního organismu.

In 1907, C. C. Little began to study hair colouring heritability. Consequently, he created the first inbred strain of laboratory mice - DBA (dilute, brown, non-agouti). Nevertheless, the history of using experimental mice goes back even further. It was G. Mendel, who originally used them, before moving on to peas in his experiments. But only the targeted production of various inbred lab mice at the Jackson Laboratory at Bar Harbor resulted in large-scale use of mice as a suitable model laboratory organism.
