Článek přibližuje biologii a ekologii invazního bolševníku velkolepého (Heracleum mantegazzianum), zejména z hlediska životního cyklu a reprodukce, jejichž charakter rozhoduje o úspěchu či neúspěchu šíření a invaze a jejichž znalost je proto zásadní pro plánování kontrolních zásahů a preventivních opatření. Vyvrací také některé dlouho tradované polopravdy, např. ohledně extrémní produkce semen nebo době jejich přežívání v půdě.

This article deals with the biology and ecology of Heracleum mantegazzianum, primarily from the standpoint of its life cycle and reproduction, the character of which is decisive with regard to the success or failure of the propagation and invasion of the species. Thus the corresponding knowledge is important for the planning of control and prevention measures. Some not fully correct theories are also discussed, e.g. those regarding extremely high seed production or the period of their survival in the ground.
