The Cape floristic region is renowned for its remarkable diversity of geophytes. This area is home to more than 1 550 bulb species, most of which grow nowhere else. The most species–rich plant family is Iridaceae, which generally harbours winter– and spring–flowering species. In autumn, plants from family Amaryllidaceae flower in profusion, especially after fires. Numerous Cape bulbs have become popular ornamental plants, being in the horticultural trade for many years.
