A need for the coordination of the political activities of forestry sectors of European countries has arisen and developed since the 1990s. The principles of a common forestry policy were formulated during four Ministerial Conferences on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) to date. Many western European countries have implemented these principles and focused on a transition to close–to–nature forest management.
