With respect to butterfly (Lepidoptera) species richness, the Pálava Protected Landscape Area, a part of the Lower Morava UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its broader vicinity is the richest region in the Czech Republic. Approx. 68 % of butterfly species ever reported in the entire Czech Republic have been found there. The area is also important because of the grapevine growing there. The author describes developments in pesticide use since the late 20th century. At present, most vineyards use biologically friendly measures involving integrated plant protection (e.g. pheromone steamers). Since the 1990s, butterfly fauna has been studied near differently managed vineyards — much greater biodiversity has been documented near those managed in an environmentally friendly way.
