Admirals are widespread across the Holarctic and their caterpillars (the 2nd stage) hibernate in a special leaf tube – hibernaculum. In the springtime of the next year caterpillars finish the development of the 2nd stage. This means that the genus regularly develops in four stages only. Special attention is paid to the Southern White Admiral (L. reducta) which annually produces three generations in southern Europe. The second generation does not hibernate and displays specific behaviour patterns.
