Vulkanická aktivita hraje významnou roli ve vývoji přírody vysokých And. Studovali jsme rostlinná společenstva a biodiverzitu v okolí staré neaktivní sopky (Chimborazo) a aktivního vulkánu (Cotopaxi). Analyzovali a srovnávali jsme vegetaci různě starých sopečných laharů a s podobně extrémními substráty středoevropských průmyslových doponií (uložišť). 500 let dlouhá časová řada na Cotopaxi umožňuje charakterizovat změny vegetační struktury a druhového složení. Studium kolonizace a sukcese mladých sopečných substrátů může napomoci chápat mechanismy obnovy oblastí narušených lidskou činností.

Volcanic activity is an important part of the natural history of the high Andes. We studied vegetation composition and diversity on old inactive (Chimborazo) and active (Cotopaxi) volcanoes. The vegetation was sampled on lahars of different age and compared with a Central European industrial deposit with similar substrate characteristics. Study of colonization and succession in the young volcano material and in the areas disturbed by human activities would help to elucidate the mechanisms behind vegetation and landscape restoration.
