Owlflies are important representatives of rock steppes. As their habitats have become overgrown since grazing has ceased, these conspicuous insects have become increasingly rare. Two owlfly species have been found in the Czech Republic. The European Owlfly (Libelloides coccajus) was repeatedly observed in what is now the Křivoklát Area UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Central Bohemia) during the first half of the 20th century. The East European Libelloides macaronius has occurred in two isolated areas: in Central Bohemia and South Moravia.
