Several Carpathian snail species reached the Bohemian Massif during the Holocene climatic optimum. One of them, the door snail Macrogastra latestriata, is a typical inhabitant of primeval forests. Since the Holocene climatic optimum, its population only survived in a small area in eastern Moravia. However, recent research led to the finding of three isolated populations in the Jeseniky protected landscape area. Special ecological requirements of M. latestriata (occurrence only in preserved forest patches) and its fragmented distribution in the Czech Republic make the species critically endangered and call for strict protection.
