The big cats are some of the most impressive and best-known animals at all. Although the phylogenetic evidence based on molecular methods indicates the fairly ancient origin of the subfamily Pantherinae, the evolutionary history of the most contemporary species can be traced back just a few million years into geological history. The extinct Panthera blytheae of Central Asia from the Upper Miocene is the most ancient kind, supposedly the snow leopard's ancestor. Also the other two extinct species P. zdanskyi and P. palaeosinensis from the Lower Pleistocene both share Asian origins and occurrences. The same is true for the tiger, which is evidently the descendant of the former one. Unfortunately, the future of these beautiful beasts is in great jeopardy, since they are constantly suffering from the loss of suitable habitats and poaching.
