A reference sequence of barley genome (Hordeum vulgare, 5 Gb, giga base pairs) was published in the scientific journal Nature in April 2017. The project started in 2006 and the sequence was finished in 2015. An analogous project for the bread wheat genome (Triticum aestivum, 17 Gb) started in 2005, completion of the sequence was announced in January 2017. The sequencing project for rye genome (Secale cereale, 8 Gb) started this year and should be accomplished before the end of the year. This enormous progress is enabled by a rapid development of technologies and bioinformatics tools, which have dramatically changed approaches to sequencing of large genomes. The article focuses on comparison of strategies and procedures applied in sequencing projects of barley, wheat and rye.
