High concentrations of heavy metals in the environment negatively affect the life of most living organisms. Due to their limited mechanical motion abilities, plants have only one survival option if they occur in a contaminated area – adaptation. Identification and characterization of genes responsible for heavy metal resistance and an understanding of their biological functions are key topics in present-day biology.
