Tento článek přináší informace o současném stavu populací zvonovce liliolistého (Adenophora liliifolia) v České republice a v několika zemích střední Evropy – Slovenska, Polska, Maďarska a Rumunska.

This article provides overall information on the present condition of the ladybell species Adenophora liliifolia populations in the Czech Republic and several countries of Central Europe – Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. This species is considered to represent the European-South-Siberian geoelement, which tolerates an extreme continental climate with a short growing season, warm but short summers and long winters with severe frosts. The centre of its distribution is in Western Asia – southern Siberia, from where it extends to east Asia, to north-west Turkey and to Europe. The species is scattered across Europe and forms isolated populations. In the whole Central European region, its populations are declining. This species is protected in Europe according to the Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (92/43/EEC). The coppice is a typical habitat of A. liliifolia, and used to be a widespread forest management method. However, changes in landscape management during the last two centuries caused the extinction of this species because of shady and more eutrophicated high forests (often with conifers) that replaced coppices. Today A. liliifolia grows in lowlands in small populations in remnants of former light oak forests, their ecotones and adjacent meadows. At higher altitudes it grows on rocky outcrops in beech forests and in light parts of riparian forests. Eutrophication, shading, overpopulated wild animals and expansive broad-leaved herbs are the main factors causing the decline of A. liliifolia populations in Central Europe. They are not primarily threatened by loss of genetic diversity, but are endangered by extinction of suitable habitats. Therefore specific management in most of the localities is necessary. All Czech populations growing in forests, if not protected by fences against grazing, were browsed by overpopulated hoofed game. The level of grubbing out underground organs was found to be increasing, especially in oak-hornbeam forests at Karlštejn in Bohemian Karst Protected Landscape Area. The population in Babinské meadows is negatively affected not only by grazing and grubbing-out, but also by expansion of Calamagrostis epigejos. Moreover, Rubus spp. expansion affects the ladybell populations mainly in oak-hornbeam forests. Recently a conservation program for A. liliifolia started in the Czech Republic with the aim to find the most successful and efficient management method for each of the present sites. It aims not only to preserve the natural populations in situ but also to develop appropriate techniques for ex situ preservation (creation of a sterile tissue culture, appropriate storage of seeds in seed banks, experimental germination tests and cultivation etc.).
