Zájem o tyto extrémofilní houby v současnosti vzrůstá kvůli snahám pochopit mechanismy adaptací k extrémním podmínkám a především z důvodu jejich možného využití v biotechnologickém průmyslu.

Planet Earth contains a wide variety of environments with extreme conditions incompatible with the life of a human organism. Such conditions include extreme temperatures, extreme values of pH or high pressure, to name just a few. The presence of bacteria in these environments has been known for some time, but recently it has turned out that many extreme biotopes are also inhabited or even dominated by fungi. The extremotolerance is widespread throughout the entire fungus kingdom, and not limited to a single phylogenetic group. There is a growing interest in these extremophilic fungi, because of the efforts to understand the mechanisms of adaptations to extreme conditions and their possible application in industrial biotechnology.
