Bělověžský prales patří k nejstarším a také nejrozlehlejším chráněným lesním oblastem v Evropě. Kdysi požíval ochrany královské a posléze carské honitby, dnes je proslaven ochranou jedné z posledních přirozených oblastí výskytu zubra (Bison bonasus) a mnoha dalších pralesních organismů. Prales doznává v posledních desetiletích značných změn zejména v zastoupení dřevin. Je zdokumentována poměrně intenzivní expanze habru obecného (Carpinus betulus) do všech původních porostů včetně teplomilných doubrav, s nimiž mizí řada vzácných světlomilných druhů rostlin v podrostu a jsou postupně nahrazovány druhy stínomilnými. Ochrana pralesa spočívá v zachování jeho přirozeného vývoje bez zásahu člověka, a to i přes degradaci biodiverzity.

Bialowieza Forest is one of the oldest and most extensive protected forest areas in Europe. Once it was under the protection of the Royal and later the Imperial Game Reserve, but today it is famous for protecting the natural population of the European Bison (Bison bonasus) and many other organisms typical of old forests. In recent decades, significant changes in the representation of tree species were documented in the interior of Bialowieza Forest. The intensive expansion of the European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) into all original stands, including thermophilous oak trees, was reported. Many rare species of heliophilous plants disappear in the undergrowth there, being gradually replaced by shade-tolerant species. The actual protection should be based on preserving its natural development without any human intervention, despite the degradation of biodiversity.
