Úvodní text monotematického čísla Živy přináší stručné nastínění historie oboru a principů, kterými se řídí invazní proces a od nichž se odvíjí terminologie spojená se studiem nepůvodních organismů. Probírá nejdůležitější hypotézy a teorie invazivnosti druhů a invazibility společenstev, zabývá se významem biologických vlastností a jejich interakcí s dalšími faktory a představuje budoucí témata invazní biologie.

The introduction to this special issue includes a brief account of the history and future of the field, as well as an overview of the principles driving the invasion process and of the terms associated with the study of invasive organisms. Some of the most important hypotheses of species invasiveness and habitat invasibility are outlined and the role of species traits and their interaction with other factors is explored.
