The present territory of the Czech Republic appears to be a promised land for alien fishes due to favourable conditions for their spread. Rivers are anthropogenically heavily influenced, vivid aquaculture activities are performed all over the territory, including traditional pond aquaculture, salmonid aquaculture and fish stocking of rivers and dams for recreational fisheries purpose. Population density is high and many people are engaged in leisure activities such as fishing or keeping aquatic organisms in aquariums and outdoor garden ponds. Our relatively small country (approximately 78 000 square kilometres) lies in source areas of three main European watersheds (North Sea, Baltic Sea and Black Sea), moreover there are no visible boundaries among different water basins from the human perspective. This situation provides a great potential for accelerating the movement of alien fishes not only between river basins, but also from one side of Europe to another. In any case, temperature remains the main obstacle for many alien organisms. The present text outlines the process of fish invasion. Some essential questions regarding the definition of alien fish and their invasiveness, toleration or eradication are also discussed.
