Pole Červeného seznamu Mezinárodního svazu ochrany přírody (IUCN) mají na svědomí celou pětinu z 680 vyhynulých živočišných druhů právě biologické invaze – a bezpočet dalších druhů v současnosti ohrožují.

Invasive animals are one of the main factors threatening native fauna (mainly vertebrates) and flora all over the world. The biggest impact is mostly caused by well-known species – rats, cats, goats, pigs, birds and even frogs; these organisms cause direct impact (namely by predation and grazing), as well as indirect impact, through the spread of pathogens (such as amphibian fungus or avian malaria). The most threatened vertebrates are birds and mammals, and islands with a long-isolated evolutionary history are the most impacted areas. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists biological invasions as the sole cause of extinction for a fifth of the 680 extinct species – and many more are currently at risk.
