A long-term perspective enables us to better understand the present-day ecosystem structure and its diversity. Paleoecology studies the relationship between organisms and performs ecosystem reconstructions in the geological past on timescales of centuries and millennia. In this paper we explore different views of nature’s functions in terms of their naturalness, which can be found in various phases of historical development.
