Biodiversity is a term that is very popular nowadays. We speak about biodiversity loss, biodiversity protection and the importance of biodiversity for mankind. It appears in political debates and policy statements. Here I explain what biodiversity actually means, how it can be measured and which are the basic factors that affect it. In conclusion I discuss the importance of biodiversity for humans and ecosystem functions.
