V poslední době přepisujeme postglaciální dějiny středoevropských lesů. Počátky lokálního výskytu, případně šíření jednotlivých významných lesních dřevin se posouvají čím dál tím víc do minulosti. Oproti dřívějšku je kladen větší důraz na disturbance, zejména požárové a pastevní. Více dnes doceňujeme skutečnost, že změny lesních ekosystémů byly v průběhu celého holocénu řízeny nejen klimatem, ale též lidskými aktivitami a zákonitým vývojem půdních poměrů. Významné poučení poskytují výzkumy moderních analogií minulých lesních ekosystémů, které nacházíme daleko v kontinentálních oblastech východní Evropy a jižní Sibiře. Na základě pylových dat se do jisté míry daří modelování minulé vegetace. Nejen pylová data jsou dnes uchovávána ve veřejně přístupných databázích.

Recently we have rewritten the postglacial history of Central European forests. The beginnings of the local occurrence, or the spread of individual trees, are being moved more and more into the past. Compared to earlier views, more emphasis is placed on disturbances, especially of a pastoral nature and involving fire. Today we appreciate more the fact that changes in forest ecosystems have been driven not only by the climate, but also by human activities and the development of soil conditions throughout the Holocene. Research on modern analogies of past forest ecosystems, which are situated far away in the continental regions of Eastern Europe and southern Siberia, provides significant lessons. Based on pollen data, the modelling of past vegetation is also increasingly successful. Most relevant fossil data are currently stored in public databases.
