Refugia can only be delimited with a specific time span and environmental change in mind. Due to the cyclic nature of the glacials, at any time there are species that are restricted to refugia and others, whose ranges extend beyond their stable range core. Our understanding of biodiversity may be biased if we only consider present distributions or base it on experience from areas heavily affected by the glacial cycles.
