Taxonomicky obtížný rod kurkuma (Curcuma) z čel. zázvorovitých (Zingiberaceae) zahrnuje asi 65-110 druhů rozšířených v Asii a jeden druh přesahující do Austrálie. Upoutá svým zajímavým květenstvím, ale nejpodstatnější částí kurkum především z hlediska využití (výroba koření, příprava pokrmů, léčebné účinky) je dužnatý oddenek ukrytý pod zemí. Nejznámějším pěstovaným druhem je kurkuma dlouhá (C. longa) s kořenem sytě oranžovožluté barvy).

The taxononomically difficult genus Curcuma from the family Zingiberaceae includes approximately 65 - 110 species distributed in Asia and one species extending up to Australia. The genus is attractive due to its inflorescence, but the most important part of these plants from the point of view of practical use is a fleshy rhizome hidden under the ground (used as spice, for preparation of dishes and for its curative properties). Curcuma longa is the best known planted species (with dark orange-yellow roots).
