Representatives of tree stranglers can be found in different families (e.g. Anacardiaceae, Araliaceae, etc.), but the genus of figs (Ficus) of the Moraceae family is the richest one. Nevertheless, the process of host tree decomposition lasts decades and sometimes about a century, the result of which is a fig tree with a hollow stem and decayed wood remnants. The genus Clusia, native to the tropics and sub-tropics of the New World is also ranked among the important stranglers.
