Nudibranches, also known as sea slugs or naked snails (Opistobranchia) are mostly nocturnal marine animals. Their original hard external shell has been reduced and transformed into a small internal one or is completely missing. They breathe with fruticose lungs, secondary branchiae (gills) or the whole body surface. In the Mediterranean Sea there are approx. 470 known species belonging to all nine orders of the subclass Opistobranchia. Various species from five orders commonly occur in the Adriatic Sea. Some of them are presented in detail in this article.
