Lacandonia schismatica (Triuridaceae, Pandanales) is a small, myco-heterotrophic plant with a unique flower structure. Its discovery in Mexico 20 years ago has stimulated many scientific controversies about its morphology, origin and phylogeny. The most remarkable characteristic is the inverse position of male and female reproductive organs in the flower. This is associated with other peculiarities, such as the unique DNA organization in the cell and pollination biology.
