The Oxlip (Primula elatior) is a promising model for addressing the role of phenotypic plasticity versus the genetic basis of traits in populations differentiated along altitudinal gradients. The genetic variation of P. elatior populations has hitherto been poorly studied. Therefore we provided the first insight into the population-genetic variation of this species. Microsatellite analysis revealed three well-defined genetic groups in the mountain regions – the Jeseníky Mts., the Krkonoše Mts. (Giant Mts.) and the Tatra Mts., thus we suggested parallel colonization of subalpine areas from low altitudes in each mountain region.
