As early as the 1970s, views began to emerge that immunological factors are significantly associated with the onset and development of the atherosclerotic process. In 2001, the European Society for Atherosclerosis in Geneva organized a Symposium on the Immune System in Atherosclerosis. More than 200 scientists and clinical specialists presented new data that confirmed that development and progression of atherosclerosis is accompanied by a number of immunological factors. According to current views, the arteries are regarded as artery tertiary lymphoid organs (ATLO) with a cellular structure analogous to secondary lymphoid tissue, which produce a number of immunocompetent cells synthetizing humoral factors including specific antibodies that both directly and indirectly affect the course of the disease. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the current view of the complex role of ATLO in the development of atherosclerosis.
