Regulace genového toku patrně chrání mikroorganismy před genetickou erozí a nežádoucím splýváním různě adaptovaných genotypů.

Our knowledge of prokaryotic diversity has vastly expanded in the last few decades thanks to the progress made in molecular genetics procedures. New findings have changed our notion of the diversity and quantity of prokaryotes and enabled us to efficiently study prokaryotic ecology for the first time. It is becoming clear that prokaryotes possess similarly complex interactions when compared to more complex oganisms. Most prokaryotic evolution does not tend towards enhancing their ability to cope with abiotic stress, but towards fine-tuning their strategies within ecosystems. Increasing evidence shows that prokaryotes are organized as biological species whose integrity is maintained by precisely-regulated horizontal gene transfer. Regulation of the gene flow probably protects the microorganisms from genetic erosion and mixing of differently adapted lineages.
