This article deals with the overlooked family Sisyridae – spongeflies (also spongillaflies) of the order Neuroptera. Only three species of spongeflies are known in the Czech Republic, but almost nothing is known about their distribution and ecology. The larvae are strictly aquatic and they are closely related to the presence of colonies of sponges (Porifera) or moss animals (Bryozoa) in both standing and running freshwater. Larvae are small with distinctive mouthparts and 7 pairs of gills on the lateral side of the abdomen. Adults look like small butterflies with distinctive antennae. Like other aquatic invertebrates here, spongeflies are also threatened by increasing eutrophication, chemical pollution and other human activities.
