V Západním Ghátu v Indii byl objeven nový druh ryby, záhadohlavec Glumův (Aenigmachanna gollum), z řádu Anabantiformes, který představuje nový druh zcela nové čeledi Aenigmachannidae. Tento nález vyvolal značný zájem jak u odborné, tak u laické veřejnosti, neboť byl tento druh prezentován jako živá fosilie a potenciální gondwanský relikt z podzemních vod. Podrobnější analýza však ukazuje, že ryba nevykazuje typické znaky spojené s podzemními druhy. Není jednoznačné, zda záhadohlavec žije výhradně v podzemí, nebo zda se vyskytuje i v povrchových vodách. Rozporuplné výsledky v odhadech doby divergence od příbuzných druhů (109 versus 34 milionů let) dále komplikují určení jeho evolučního původu. Závěrem lze říci, že ačkoli A. gollum představuje nepochybně fascinující evoluční hádanku a významný objev, jeho zařazení mezi gondwanské relikty nebo striktně podzemní druhy zůstává předmětem dalšího výzkumu.

A new species of fish, the Gollum Snakehead (Aenigmachanna gollum), of the order Anabantiformes, has been discovered in the Western Ghats of India. This species is a new species of an entirely new family, Aenigmachannidae. The finding has generated considerable interest among the scientific community and the public alike, as the species has been presented as a living fossil and a potential Gondwanan relic from the subterranean environment. However, closer analysis reveals that the fish does not exhibit the typical features associated with subterranean species. The mystery of the Gollum Snakehead's habitat remains unresolved, as it is unclear whether the species lives exclusively underground or occurs in surface waters. The conflicting results in estimates of the divergence time from related species (i.e. from 34 to 109 million years) further complicate the determination of its evolutionary origin. In conclusion, although A. gollum is undoubtedly a fascinating evolutionary puzzle and a significant discovery, its classification as a Gondwanan relic or strictly subterranean species remains a subject for further research.
