Human evolution was a diversified and selective process leading to the extinction of certain species (robust australopithecines, probably Homo erectus). This paper focuses on human species that survived until the last glaciation and provided a readable genome (Neanderthals and Denisovans in various parts of Eurasia, and anatomically modern humans expanding out of Africa). During certain time-periods and in certain areas these species coexisted, but only anatomically modern Homo sapiens survived until the Holocene. Possible causes of their disappearence are discussed. However, a small percentage of our present genome is inherited from our relatives, so that in this sense their extinction was not total.
