The Pleistocene is the penultimate geological epoch of the Earth's development, characterised by an intense alternation of cold drier glacials and warmer humid interglacials. This constantly changing world brings with it intense evolutionary pressure on various groups of organisms. Moreover, natural conditions change more frequently and with greater intensity during the Pleistocene, and organisms respond to these cyclical climate changes in such a way that by the end of the Pleistocene, the adaptive strategies of many different groups have reached their peak. One of the trends is the increase in body size, which leads to the designation of some forms as megafauna. The complex development of the Pleistocene, the mutual interaction, development and final extinction of these giants is very important for our understanding of this "chaotic" chapter in the development of our planet.
