In Europe we can find three species of the family Hymenophyllaceae. They all require high humidity and a constant temperature - this is why they often find suitable habitat in sandstone areas. In Czech Republic, Tunbridge Filmy-fern (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense) has supposedly become extinct but there is still approximately 200 localities of Killarney fern (Trichomanes speciosum). Nevertheless, at all of them you will find only the leafless gametophytes that look rather like green filamentous algae.
