Old fields around the Czech villages, mainly Sfânta Elena, Romania, found 200 years ago, show how traditional landscape management can affect biodiversity. The dependence of the number of species on the abandoned field’s age displays the unimodal shape of this relationship with the maximum of diversity in plant stands approximately thirteen years old. The influence of the key factors on the plant composition of the old fields suggests a significance order as follows: time of land abandonment, burning and heat load index – natural microsite conditions.
