Velcí živočichové (megafauna) souše, sladkých vod i moří formovali biosféru stovky milionů let. Díky velikosti těla přemísťovali živiny, roznášeli semena a udržovali otevřená společenstva. Jejich vymizení na konci pleistocénu ochromilo tok látek a energie. Článek shrnuje globálně platné funkce megafauny a vysvětluje, proč je jejich obnovou trofický rewilding.

The Wild Cattle of Cambodia (1957) - FULL DOCUMENTARY

Large animals (megafauna) on land and in fresh waters and seas shaped the biosphere for hundreds of millions of years. Owing to their body size they redistributed nutrients, dispersed seeds and kept communities open. Their late-Pleistocene loss crippled the flow of matter and energy. We review the globally valid functions of megafauna and argue that trophic rewilding restores them.
